Dear Customer,

Thank you for your confidence in choosing FiberScanONE™.

This consistency meter is the fruit of a research lasted over 5 years on

microwaves engineered to read water density, and over 10 years of microwave

technology developments, started with our PresScan™ press fabrics moisture

meters.

The FiberScan™ research involved our labs, Universities, Excellence Research

Centres and many Engineers using daily our drainage meters, who endlessly

helped us to finely tune the instrument.

The results: for the first time dangerous and critical ionising radiation

equipments were replaced forever by a harmless, easy to handle and

transport, microwave meter. FiberScan™ was born.

FiberScan™ changed forever the technologies and principles of the drainage

meters, setting what is now a standard in the PMC Industry.

Today, FiberScan™ advantages are so obvious that it’s advanced technologies,

protected by multiple patents, are in the research sight of companies

producing PMC instruments.

We carefully listen to our customers, and implement constant improvements in

our products. This attention led to the development of the FiberScanONE™

version, with new advanced features:

- Lighter weight, FiberScanONE™ is the lightest consistency meter on the

market;

- Control unit completely integrated in the instrument, more balanced to use;

- Telescopic pole extended to 1,56m;

- Water thickness readable in excess of 48mm, the highest ever for a

microwave consistency meter, no limits of measurement on machines

producing pulp or linerboard;

- New user interface and graphical functions: display of the drainage survey

trend on board the instrument, possibility to scan and show CMD mass

profiles;

- Hybrid ceramic/plastic foil;

- HostXL™ fully integrated database software, for the display and printing of

the drainage & retention profiles;

- Smaller and lighter transportation case.

Important information and general comments on the

safe use of FiberScanONE™

WARNING!

FiberScanONE™ is engineered for the use on dangerous machines

(i.e. paper machines). The user of FiberScanONE™ must be properly

trained and must take all possible precautions required to perform

safe measurements on the machine where the instrument is used.

WARNING!

User must take the possible safety precautions to prevent

entanglement of garments or FiberScanONE™, respective

accessories and cables into the moving parts of the machine where

the instrument is used.

WARNING!

The operator must make sure at any time, during the use of

FiberScanONE™, that the connecting cable is not looping around

any part of the operator body, to prevent any possibility to be taken

into the machine moving parts.

WARNING!

While especially engineered for the use in rough conditions, before

each use FiberScanONE™ must be carefully externally inspected, to

verify the perfect condition to perform safe measurements.

Particularly, the external inspection must verify any possible

danger coming from damages on the ceramic foil or instrument

parts becoming loose or damaged.

WARNING!

Ceramic is sensitive to thermal shock. Temperature alerts are

implemented. Please let FiberScanONE™ heat up, if stored for long

time in very cool ambient; preventing to do so might cause

permanent and dangerous damage to the ceramic foil.

CAUTION!

During the use of FiberScanONETM, please close the auxiliary

connector with the screw cap provided.

CAUTION!

Only plug in the battery charger supplied into an electrical system

that is up to standards.

CAUTION!

During the charging process, user should be able to reach easily the

power plug.

CAUTION!

Plug in the battery charger only indoors, in dry areas, away from

heat sources (radiators, heaters, etc...).

CAUTION!

Do NOT use FiberScanONETM while the battery charger is plugged

into the electrical system.

CAUTION!

Use only replacement Li-IOn batteries authorised by the

manufacturer. (please see chapter on "Cleaning and Maintenance")

Warning on correct use of the instrument

CAUTION!

FiberScanONE™ reads the water grammage, not the total mass. The

instrument advanced technologies make it virtually insensitive to

both the components present in the paper stock and the forming

fabric mass.

To get the final mass numbers, please carefully read to paragraph

2.0.0.

CAUTION!

Ceramic is sensitive to thermal shock. Temperature alerts are

implemented. Please let FiberScanONE™ heat up, if stored for long

time in very cool ambient; preventing to do so might cause

permanent and dangerous damage to the ceramic foil.

CAUTION!

The ceramic foil needs a little break-in time to loose the sharpness.

To get the best performance, it requires few hours of usage.

CAUTION!

Always consult our Engineers, prior to upgrading the instrument

firmware, calling the direct number +39 035 715282 or sending an

e-mail to [email protected]. Wrong procedures might corrupt the

control unit ROM.

1. Introduction

FiberScanONE™ is a diagnostic instrument based on an innovative microwave

technology, developed for the pulp & paper industry.

The instrument measures the density of the water over the sensor head, and

the measurement takes into account the water contained in the forming fabric,

but not the density of the fabric itself, which is practically transparent to the

interaction with the electromagnetic field generated by the sensor.

In this way extremely precise and reliable data of consistency can be obtained.

The instrument is also equipped with a temperature gauge in order to

compensate for temperature variations, and a patented principle to detect and

compensate the variations of the water charge, consequent to use of

chemicals, fibres, charges etc.

FiberScanONE™ is equipped with 32 Mb memory, where up to 2000

measurements can be saved.

FiberScanONE™ is provided with an integrated BlueTooth® communication

system, to download the data to a PC.

2. How to calculate the drainage curve

FiberScanONE™ measures the total mass of water on the forming fabric,

plus the water contained into the f. fabric void volume, expressed in

superficial density (g/m2).

Since FiberScanONE™ microwave is insensitive to fillers, they have to be

added in the calculation in a simple way.

The total mass on the f. fabric is expressed by the following formula:
