Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Better Results
Pyrography is the correct term for the technique more
commonly known as “wood burning”. The term means
the art of ‘drawing with re’. It is an ancient craft prac-
ticed throughout the world. Originally pokers were
heated in res and created rather crude results. During
the Victorian period the craft enjoyed it’s greatest popu-
larity. Victorian ladies developed various tools such as
ne steel rods similar to knitting needles and heated
them in a re or over a spirit lamp, allowing them to work
more skillfully and create ne designs. The rods would
lose their heat quickly and have to be returned to the re
for reheating, making the process slow and tedious.
Today Pyrography is enjoying renewed popularity due to
the advancement in wood burning irons, the variety of avail-
able tips and the vast assortment of surfaces to decorate.
Tips and Their Uses
Your new Weller woodburning kit comes with a wide variety of burning,
cutting, branding, and specialty tips. To get the most from your kit, follow
these instructions to create the results you want.
1.
Universal tip—multi-purpose tip. Hold the tip at various angles
for creating lines of varying widths.
2.
Dot tip—for making dots of various sizes and depths. Using this
tip, make light touches to your surface for ne dots. Hold the tip
on the surface for longer periods of time to create deep holes.
3.
Groove tip—for burning grooves of various depths. Move slowly
across your work to make deeper grooves.
Getting Started
Set up a safe work area. You can tape the iron holder to a piece of
ceramic tile. The tile is heavy enough to keep the iron stand from
tipping over while it protects the work surface. You will also need a
reproof container like a glass dish or metal lid to hold your various
tips while they are cooling. You will need a pair of needle nose pliers
with smooth jaws to remove the hot tips from the iron. Remember
that metal conducts heat very quickly. Never attempt to change a hot
tip with your ngers. Protect your work surface with aluminum foil, a
homosote work board, or a piece of plywood.
The best way to get started is to familiarize yourself with the iron,
the various tips and the patterns they create. See the “Tips and Their
Uses” section for an explanation of how to use each tip included with
your new kit.

Plug in your woodburning iron and allow it about four minutes to heat
up. Hold the wood burner like a pencil. Do not touch any of the metal
parts, as they are hot. Start by writing your name. Then practice pulling
the point toward you instead of pushing it away. You can vary the appear-
ance of the pattern by the amount of time you leave the tip on the surface
and by the pressure applied to the tip. The longer the tip stays on the
surface the deeper and darker the pattern will appear. The brown shading
is affected by the speed of the tip across the surface. The smoother the
surface of the material, the clearer and ner the design will appear.
After you have practiced a while, make a sample board as a reminder
of patterns you can create using different tips and techniques. This
will make it fun and easy to complete a new project with an interesting
display of “pyrography techniques”.

Calligraphy tip—This tip mimics the shape of a calligraphy
pen. Do not allow the iron to rotate in your hand as you trace
calligraphy letters.
5.
Shading tip—This tip is tapered so that you can use it in several
positions to create light or dark shading.
6.
Branding tips—Apply these tips vertically on your project
surface. Remove them in a straight vertical motion to make a
distinct pattern.
7.
Stencil cutting tip—Use this tip to cut craft pattern stencils in
Mylar
®
or other stencil material.
8.
Pattern transfer tip—Follow these steps to transfer printed
patterns onto your project:
a)
Make a copy of your pattern using a laser printer.
b)
Place the copy face down on your project surface.
c)
Fit the woodburning iron with the pattern transfer tip
and allow the tip to heat to working temperature (about
ve minutes).
d)
Using the pattern transfer tip, slowly rub the back of the
pattern in a circular motion to transfer the printed pattern
to your project surface.
e)
You can now burn your pattern into your project surface.
9.
Knife tip—To install the knife blade onto the iron, carefully
insert the blade into the chuck. Insert the threaded chuck onto
the soldering iron barrel and tighten. Use this specialty tip to
cut foam, rope, or other soft rigid materials.
Keep your tips clean for good performance and long life. Carbon may
build up on the tip surface as you work, especially if you’re working with
a sappy wood such as pine. Use a ne grit sandpaper or wire brush to
gently clean the tips while they are hot.
Designs
You can adapt a variety of designs from almost any media. From
coloring books to garden manuals just about every item has been
captured as line art or a simple sketch. Once you have become familiar
with the iron and the patterns you can create using the various tips, it
will be easier for you to create your own designs. Use a copy machine
to reduce and enlarge designs to suit your project.
Transferring Designs
Tools needed:
Tracing paper
Pencil
Ruler
Low tack masking tape
Carbon paper
Place your pattern on the surface and secure with masking tape across
the top. Lift the pattern and place the carbon paper directly on the surface.
Reposition the pattern and lightly trace the design using a pencil.
Double check your design before removing the pattern to make sure
you have transferred the entire pattern. Use a ruler to trace straight lines.
Surfaces
A wide variety of surfaces are suitable for pyrography. Hardwoods such
as beech, sycamore, birch and hornbeam are most popular. Most craft
stores carry a good selection of these varieties.
Birch plywood works well and is available at home improvement
centers. You can also make your own tabletops and furniture using
plywood and decorate it with your new skills.
Smooth grained and light colored woods work best. Stay away from
dark, coarse grained hardwoods. Pines are not suitable because they
have too much sap causing it to burn and mar your patterns.
Cork, leather, some papers, and even wax candles make great design
surfaces. Check your craft store and woodworking shops for suitable
surfaces. Experiment! This is a hobby. That means you can just do it
because it’s fun.
Safety Tip
:
Caution should be taken when working with certain hardwoods
such as, English pressure treated or tropical woods. Avoid using
very thin plywood or veneer because they contain adhesives that
emit dangerous fumes when heated. Wear protective masks.
Coloreando los diseños
El color la agrega vida a un grabado. Las puntas han logrado dar excelente
textura al diseño, ahora es el momento de darle el toque nal. Al terminar el
pirograbado y antes de aplicar barniz, pruebe algunos de estos materiales y
asegúrese de limpiar huellas digitales y grasa de la super cie, con una goma
de borrar o alcohol.

Tintura para zapatos, para dar un tono profundo
Agregue un poco de agua al material para mantenerlo uido. La pintura espesa
tiende a tapar el diseño artístico. Se puede usar una placa de espuma sintética
como paleta de colores, ya que no es necesario limpiarla después de usarla y
la pintura no penetra la super cie.
Si fuera posible, pruebe primero los colores y la técnica a aplicar, en
materiales descartables o en una parte muy pequeña o poco visible del
trabajo. El color se puede aplicar al diseño y también al fondo.
Aplicación de barniz
Para proteger el trabajo realizado, aplicar dos o tres capas de barniz brillante
o satinado. Es mejor usar un paño suave o una esponja, ya que el uso de un
pincel puede dejar pelos o marcas. Siga las instrucciones del fabricante del
barniz en lo referente a forma de aplicación, seguridad y tiempo de secado.
Medidas de seguridad
Si bien el soldador Weller

es una herramienta segura y cumple con las
requisitos y reglamentaciones vigentes en Norteamérica para este tipo de
artefacto, toda herramienta eléctrica debe manejarse siempre con mucho
cuidado. Tanto la punta como la resistencia calefactora pueden alcanzar
altas temperaturas. Observe siempre estas simples medidas de seguridad:
Mantener la herramienta alejada del alcance de los niños. Mantener el
soldador alejado de materiales in amables. Para prevenir quemaduras,
suponga siempre que la punta está caliente. Asegúrese de que la punta ni el
soldador nunca entren en contacto con el cordón eléctrico. Antes de efectuar
cualquier tarea con el soldador (como por ejemplo, cambio de punta),
asegúrese de que esté desenchufado y frío. No sumerja la herramienta en
ningún líquido. Trabajar siempre en un lugar bien ventilado. Al terminar de
usar el soldador, desenchufarlo, dejar que se enfríe y guardarlo en un lugar
seguro. Es recomendable usar gafas de seguridad para proteger los ojos
contra materiales calientes que puedan entrar en contacto accidentalmente.

Diseños
Es posible trasladar a pirograbado diseños grá cos prácticamente de
cualquier tipo. Desde libros de colorear hasta manuales de jardinería, se
pueden copiar diseños en forma de dibujo lineal o simples bosquejos. Una
vez que se haya familiarizado con el uso del soldador y de las puntas, será
más fácil crear sus propios diseños. Puede usar una fotocopiadora para
reducir o agrandar el tamaño del modelo para adaptarlo al tamaño de la
super cie de trabajo que utilizará.
Transferencia de diseños
Herramientas necesarias:
Papel de calcar
Lápiz
Regla
Cinta de enmascarar de adhesivo débil
Papel carbónico
Coloque el diseño sobre la super cie y fíjelo con cinta de enmascarar en
la parte de arriba. Levante el diseño y coloque papel carbónico sobre la
super cie de trabajo. Ahora copie el diseño pasando suavemente un lápiz
por las líneas. Antes de retirar el diseño, veri que que se hayan transferido
todas sus partes. Utilice una regla para trazar las líneas rectas.
Super cies
En pirograbado se puede usar una amplia variedad de super cies de apoyo.
Las más utilizadas son maderas duras tales como haya, sicomoro, abedul y
carpe. En la mayoría de los comercios especializados en hobbies se pueden
encontrar estas variedades.
Las placas de abedul son buenas para pirograbado, y se pueden comprar
en comercios de materiales de construcción. También puede hacer una
mesa con madera terciada y decorarla con pirograbado.
Las mejores maderas como super cie de trabajo son las de color claro
y consistencia suave. Es mejor no usar maderas duras, oscuras y de
consistencia áspera, ni tampoco pino, porque tiene mucha resina que
se puede quemar y deformar las líneas del diseño.
Corcho, cuero, algunos tipos de papel y aun velas de cera son super cies
sumamente aptas para grabar diseños. En los comercios especializados
en hobbies se pueden encontrar otras super cies de trabajo. Recuerde que
esto es un entretenimiento y puede expandir su creatividad. ¡Experimente!
Sugerencia de seguridad:
Actuar con precaución al trabajar con ciertas maderas duras
tratadas a presión o maderas tropicales. No usar madera terciada
o chapa de revestimiento muy na, ya que contienen adhesivos
que liberan emanaciones peligrosas al calentarse. Usar máscara
respiratoria para trabajar.
