C65 Divetimer Special Edition

A watch is the most convenient and beautiful way of telling the time.

But when you’re exploring the ocean depths, it has to be much more

than that. Hundreds of meters under the surface, reliability and

accuracy are matters of life and death.

And that’s the provenance behind your C65 Divetimer Special Edition.

As you’ll be aware, the dial carries a decompression scale to help you

calculate decompression stops as you ascend from a deep dive.

And while we wouldn’t advise using it when you’re underwater,

it’s a brilliant planning tool – with a remarkable history.

Decompression scales appeared on watches in 1962 when Dr Hannes

Keller – physicist, mathematician and extreme diver – attempted the

world deep-sea dive record. Not only did he require a watch to keep

track of his time underwater, but he also needed a decompression

table that let him calculate how long his stops had to be.

The result was a watch, made by Vulcain, that had a decompression

scale printed on the dial. And that scale is now found on the face

of your C65 Divetimer Special Edition.

While you might not spend your leisure time exploring, say, the

Pacic’s mega-deep Mariana Trench, it’s good to know that if you

did, you’d be able to do so with condence. And in style.

How to operate your C65 Divetimer Special Edition

Setting the time

For a superior water resistance your crown is of the screw-down

type. The crown should sit ush to the case (position 1) in order

to maintain water resistance.

• First unscrew the crown anti-clockwise from the case to position

2for winding in power. Wind in a clockwise direction to re-power

the watch. Your C65 Divetimer Special Edition has a maximum

power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound.

• Pull gently into position 3. This position is used for handsetting

and stopping of the seconds hand. For precise time setting it is

recommended to pass beyond the desired minute and to set the

hand backwards.

How to operate your C65 Divetimer Special Edition

If using the bezel for a dive and let’s say the recognised maximum

“no-stop time” is 55 minutes, then in this example (shown right)

the time at the surface immediately before the dive is 10.08am.

However the bezel marker is at the 12.00 hr position.

• Move the bezel marker anti-clockwise so that it aligns with the

8 minute position.

• You can now read that the 55 minute no decompression limit

will occur at 3 minutes past the next hour.

Diving with your watch

How to use your watch’s decompression scale

A decompression scale is a reference tool for divers to consult before

they take to the water. It enables you to work out how long your

decompression stops should be – depending on how far down you’ll

go and how long you’ll stay there.

Say you’re planning on diving at 30m for 35 minutes. Go to the

concentric ring with ‘30/95’ printed at the top and follow it around

until you hit the 35-minute index on the ‘regular’ part of the dial.

You can see that your decompression stop should be 15 minutes.

You’ll also notice some circular orange bands. These tell you the

no decompression limit for each depth. If you choose to dive

to 25m/80ft, the orange band goes to the 35-minute mark on the

dial, which is how long you can dive at this depth without taking

a decompression break.

PLEASE NOTE:

It is always useful and best practice to make a note on a

dive slate before entering the water and to carry a set of dive

tables should the dive plan change during the course of a

dive. A safety stop for 3 to 5 minutes at 15ft is recommended

at the end of all dives. A safety stop for 3 minutes at 15ft

is required any time you come within 3 pressure groups of

a no decompression limit, and for any dive to a depth of

100ft or deeper.
