Temperature Stabilization - Before removing the drive from its prote tive
plasti bag, ensure the drive has rea hed room temperature. This is
a omplished by allowing the drive to sit in its prote tive plasti bag in
the room environment for at least one hour.
ESD - This drive and its ele troni omponents are sensitive to Ele tro
Stati Dis harge (ESD). On e the drive has been removed from its ESD
prote tive plasti bag, handle it only by its sides. Do not tou h the Printed
Cir uit Board. To prevent ESD problems, tou h the metal hassis of the
omputer before handling the omputers hard drive and periodi ally
throughout the installation. If you are working in a old and/or dry limate,
use an ele trostati dis harge wristband. Your lothing generates stati

Locate an unused drive bay
You should see one or more plasti or metal plates on the fa e of your
omputer near the floppy, CD-ROM or DVD drives. These are the unused
drive bays. The ORB drive mounts in a 3½- in h drive bay. If you only have
a 5¼-in h drive bay, follow steps 1 and 2 below.
Mounting the Drive Into a 5¼-inch Adapter
Note: The remainder of this se tion provides instru tions for mounting your
ORB drive into a 5¼-in h bay adapter.
1. Slide the drive into the adapter.
If installing the ORB drive into a 5¼-in h bay with an adapter be sure
to use the s rews provided with your adapter. The ma hine s rews are
used to mount the drive in the adapter bra ket.
CAUTION: Be careful doing this to avoid damage to the drive.
2. Line the holes of the drive up with the holes of the adapter and
insert two screws into each side or the bottom of the drive.
CAUTION: Mounting screw lengths have been chosen so
that no more than -inch of the screw enters the frame

CAUTION: When installing your ORB drive, you should never
place it as a slave device to a CD-ROM, DVD or ATAPI master
device; these configurations will limit or reduce the data rate
potential of your ORB drive. It should only be installed as a
slave device to other hard drives or as a master device to
achieve maximum throughput.
Here your existing hard drive is installed as the master on the primary
hannel and the CD-ROM or DVD is installed as the slave on the primary
hannel. There is an open se ondary hannel. If there is not a able in this
port, you will need to install one yourself. We re ommend installing the ORB
drive as the master on the se ondary hannel (labeled (2) on Figure 6).
In this s enario, your hard drive is installed as the master drive on the

If you are installing and add-on EIDE ontroller ard, it is re ommended to
install the ORB drive as the master on built-in se ondary hannel.
Jumper Placement
Jumper pins are lo ated at the rear of the drive as the group of 10 pins in
5 verti al sets of two. A jumper blo k is provided to onfigure the drive for
the options master, slave and CSEL ( able sele t).
If your installation requires the ORB to be onfigured as a master drive, you
must move the jumper from the slave position to the master position. As
shown in the illustration, the jumper plug should be inserted verti ally.
CSEL ( able sele t) is only used in a very few spe ial situations. Please
see the manual that ame with your omputer for information on CSEL.
