Before You Begin your Installation
The product you have purchased is designed to be
easily installed into most IBM PC or compatible
systems. Many products have large, easy-to-read
legends to allow for the easy configuring of the
product. This installation manual contains detailed
instructions. Most included software has automatic
installation programs to place the software correctly onto your
computer. However, as all computers are configured differently, you
may be required to perform some basic DOS or Windows tasks. If you
are not familiar with basic DOS commands such as DIR, CD, or EDIT,
you should check your DOS manual, or seek assistance from you
local computer dealer to install the product.
How to get Technical Assistance
The dealer that you purchased this product or your computer from is
the first place you should go for technical assistance. The dealer is
usually the most qualified source of help, and
is most familiar with your system and how
this product should be installed. Many dealers
have customer service and technical support
programs, with varying levels of support
offered, depending on your needs and computer knowledge. Please
contact the dealer first whenever a problem occurs.
If your Dealer Can’t Assist you
If you can’t get assistance from your dealer, the manufacturer
provides varying levels of technical assistance as summarized on the
following page.

Damaged or Missing Items
We use many world-class quality assurance programs to ensure the
product you purchased is of the highest caliber. Sometimes, however,
a component may be missing from the box, or is damaged or corrupt
in some way. If this happens, immediately return the entire package
to your place of purchase so you may exchange it for a new one. Your
dealer should be able to provide you with an exchange far more
quickly than by contacting us directly. If for some reason you are
unable to return the product directly to its place of purchase, refer to

The Contents of Your Package
The contents of the Boca Research Ethernet product
package are listed below. If any items are missing or
appear incomplete or damaged, contact your dealer for
assistance.
* The red LED on the back of the BOCALANcard-PCI is
programmable. You can specify events that cause the LED to
flash. Use the BENCFG program (see p. 16) to specify these
events.
Additional Items You May Need to Complete the
Installation:
• Suitable tools to install the BOCALANcard-PCI Adapter
in your computer.
• Some network operating systems require some of their
original installation diskettes. See your network
installation manuals.

Quick Start (for Experienced Users)
This section is intended for knowledgeable and
experienced network installers who will be using the
default settings.
Hardware Installation
The default settings for the adapter are as follows:
PCI Interrupt A
REDLED Receive activity
If you need to change any of the default settings, refer to
Section Two for instructions. Otherwise, insert the adapter
into a PCI-Bus compatible slot. There are normally three
PCI expansion slots, depending on your system. PCI
(Peripheral Component Interconnect) is a new standard in
motherboard configurations. Using a 32/64-bit bus and
BIOS-configurable adapter cards, a PCI motherboard
promotes conflict-free expansion.
NOTE: If your particular PCI motherboard comes
with a “slave” PCI slot, do NOT insert the board
into that slot. It will not work. The board must be
inserted into a “master” slot.
The PCI BIOS communicates with PCI adapter cards and
dynamically configures each card during installation. The
BOCALANcard-PCI does not allow end-user selection of
DMA, IRQ, or port addresses. This is done using the PCI
standard.

Driver Installation
It will be necessary to install drivers after you’ve inserted
the Ethernet adapter into your system. Drivers for the
more popular network operating systems are included on
the device driver diskette which came with this package.
These drivers are standard implementations for their
respective systems. If you have any difficulty installing
the drivers, then refer to Section Three: Driver Installation
for particular instructions for your system. Also refer to
the README files on the device driver diskette. There is
one README file in the root directory, as well as one in
each product-specific directory. Review these files for the
latest information about drivers and installation
instructions.
Novell Compatibility
Boca Research Ethernet adapters are hardware compatible
with the NE2100 and NE1500T. Check if your network
operating system has drivers for the NE2100 or NE1500T
included with it and use these drivers if they are newer
than those on the Boca diskette. Be sure to use the
NE2100 or NE1500T drivers and not NE2000 drivers.
Troubleshooting
If the adapter does not function after you have installed it
with the necessary software, be sure the adapter is seated
firmly and that you have set all options correctly. If you
still have difficulty, refer to Section Four: Troubleshooting.

Section One: Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of a Boca Ethernet
Adapter product. These products allow you to connect a
PCI local bus computer to a 10BASE-T or 10BASE2
network. The BOCALANcard-PCI (product code: BEN1PI)
provides a twisted-pair transceiver with RJ-45 cabling for
connecting to an unshielded twisted-pair network
(10BASE-T) and a BNC-connector to attach to thin coax.
