CHAPTER 2: Introduction

2. Introduction

With the RGB Video Balun, you can transmit composite baseband red/green/blue

video signals across Category 3 or better unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable,

which is already wired into most commercial sites. Use pairs of Baluns to transmit

RGB video: The Balun near the video source takes the three composite baseband

video signals from 75-ohm coaxial cable, converts them, and transmits them over

UTP cable to the other Balun, which puts them back on coax and sends them to

their destination.

Connect the RGB Video Balun to a site’s structured cabling through a modular

wall jack in the work area. Each Balun has three BNC connectors at one end and

an RJ-45 jack at the other end.

The Video Balun is designed for use with RGB monitors, such as those often

deployed in banks, investment houses, and stock-exchange trading floors.

RGB VIDEO BALUNS

3. Installation

To install a pair of RGB Video Baluns, take these steps:

CAUTION!

D n t attempt t pen the h using. There are n user-serviceable parts

inside the RGB Vide Balun. Opening the unit will v id y ur warranty.

1. Make sure that the video-destination device is not too far away from the video-

source device (refer to the Maximum Distance specification in Chapter 1). If

the destination device is beyond the reach of the source Balun, the video

signal the device receives will be weak or nonexistent.

2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for turning off power to the video

equipment you will be attaching, and disconnecting that equipment from AC

power and from all other devices.

3. Make certain that the telecommunications outlets and cross-connects to

which you will connect the Baluns are configured properly and are labeled so

that the circuit can be identified.

CAUTION!

D not c nnect the RGB Vide Balun t a telec mmunicati n utlet

wired t unrelated equipment. Making such a c nnecti n may damage

the equipment and/ r the Balun. Make sure that all wiring is straight-

thr ugh-pinned.

4. Verify that the twisted-pair circuit you want to use is not already being used

for other LAN or telephone equipment.

5. Optional: Each Balun comes with VELCRO®mounting pads. To mount a

Balun to a surface, first make sure that that surface is free of dust, oil, etc., so

the VELCRO will adhere to it. Then peel off the adhesive backing, attach one

side of the pads to the Balun, and attach the other side to the surface.

CAUTION!

D not m unt the Balun ver equipment-ventilati n penings. D ing s

might damage the Balun r cause the equipment t verheat.

6. Attach each Balun to its associated RGB device with a set of three cables,

preferably the three included with the Balun. (If you use other cables, they

must have BNC male connectors on the Balun end.)

CHAPTER 3: Installation

7. Connect one end of a UTP cable to each Balun’s RJ-45 modular jack, as

shown in Figure 3-1. These cables must carry at least three wire pairs, and

these wires must be pinned to RJ-45 Pins 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8.

Figure 3-1. The Balun and its connectors.

8. Plug the other end of each UTP cable into the appropriate video wall outlet

or patch panel. When this is done, a complete cabling circuit should run

between the two baluns, as shown in Figure 3-2 below.

Figure 3-2. Two Baluns cabled together.

9. Reconnect and power up the video equipment.

Your RGB Video Balun system should be ready for continuous operation.
