Your SET-TEMP LIMIT has been designed
with function, reliability and safety in mind. It
is your responsibility to install it in confor-
mance with local electrical codes. For safe
operation, please pay attention to the alert
signals throughout the manual.
Intended Use
Set-Temp limit control must be connected in a
series with your heater and heater control.
This product, when used in conjunction with a
heater control, can be used to regulate the
heating in heating mantles, heating tapes, hot
plates, ovens, baths and other general heat-
ing equipment.
General Usage
Do not use this product for anything other
than its intended usage.
Warnings
To avoid personal injury:
1. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
To avoid electrical shock:
1. Use a properly grounded electrical
outlet of correct voltage and current
handling capacity.
2. If power cord becomes damaged,
replace immediately.
3. Disconnect from power supply before
servicing.

humidity.

SET-TEMP LIMIT cuts off power to laboratory
heaters to guard against thermal runaway
when the temperature sensed by a thermo-
couple exceeds the dial setting. Heating will
not resume until the “RESET” key is pressed.
5
Principles of Operation

Plug SET-TEMP LIMIT into a grounded wall
receptacle. SET-TEMP LIMIT requires a 100-
120 Volt A/C power source. SET-TEMP LIMIT
consumes approximately 25 watts in addition to
the power used by your heating mantle or other
laboratory heater.
Temperature Probe Connection
and Placement
Plug any Type-K thermocouple into the connec-
tor marked “THERMOCOUPLE.” Place the tip of
thermocouple probe into the region in which you
need to limit the temperature. Give this place-
ment some thought. For example, if you are
heating liquid in a flask with a heating mantle, it
is probably a good idea to have the tip of the
probe resting on the inside bottom of the flask.
Then, should the liquid boil away, the sensing
probe will still be effectively heated by the man-
tle and SET-TEMP LIMIT will be able to turn off
your heating mantle before any damage occurs.
Connecting your Heater and
Other Temperature Controls
SET-TEMP LIMIT must be connected in series
with your heater and other heater controls.
Always plug SET-TEMP LIMIT directly into an
A/C wall receptacle. Then, plug other tempera-
ture controls and heaters in series with SET-
TEMP LIMIT in the following order:
1. wall receptacle
2. SET-TEMP LIMIT
3. Other temperature controls (if required)
such as electronic temperature controls,
variacs etc.
4. heater (heating mantle, hot plate, oven,
bath etc.)
6
Installation

1. Turn SET-TEMP LIMIT’s power on.
The red “ALARM” light will be on.
2. Set the limit temperature by adjusting
the dial. If necessary, use a flat blade
screwdriver to turn the dial.
Note that the temperature scale is in degrees
C and degrees F.
3. Press the reset key to energize SET-
TEMP LIMIT’s receptacle.
Note that each time SET-TEMP LIMIT looses
power or is turned off, the “RESET” key must
be pressed to resume heating. Similarly, if the
thermocouple disconnects or open-circuits,
the thermocouple problem must be corrected.
After correcting the problem, press the
“RESET” key to resume heating.

Operation

Replacing Fuses
There are two fuses located at the rear of the
unit. The main fuse for the unit is a 20 Amp,
fast-acting, type KLK midget fuse. A 0.5 Amp,
5x20mm, fast-acting fuse protects the unit’s low
power electronics. If this fuse blows, use a slot-
ted screwdriver to remove the old fuse and
install a new 0.5 Amp fast-acting fuse.
General Cleaning Instructions
Wipe exterior surfaces with a lightly dampened
cloth containing a mild soap solution.

Accessories
Rigid Stainless-Steel Probes
Probes fit traditional apparatus and glassware
without modifications. Their rigid 316
Stainless-steel sheaths are .25”(6.4 mm) in
diameter, roughly the same as traditional
glass thermometers. Available with or without
Teflon coating, all have 6’ (183 cm) lead
wires.
GLASS-PROBE™ Quartz Glass
Probes
Electrothermal’s patented GLASS-PROBE is
highly resistant to most chemicals and ther-
mal shock. Sheath is the same diameter as
standard laboratory thermometers, .25” (6.4
mm) so it is compatible with common ther-
mometer adapters, clamps and apparatus.
The glossy quartz sheath may be cleaned
more thoroughly than metals, Teflon or other
glasses. Usable up to 500°C. Each thermo-
couple is individually tested and permanently
marked with a serial number for identification.
Bendable Stainless-Steel Probes
Probes have bendable 316 stainless-steel
sheaths that are 1.6 mm diameter. They may
be used straight or gently bent to suit your
application. Probe has connector that plugs
into extension cord.
Thermocouple Extension Cords
These extensions are made from appropriate
thermocouple wire to minimize their effect on
readings. Straight extension cords are 130 cm
