if there is any visible damage or if you think it might be damaged. In this case, turn off the power immedi-
ately and notify our distributor in your area or contact Accurion’s headquarters in Germany directly.
Electrical Safety
This system may be operated only on AC grounded power. Do not interrupt the protective grounding
conductor under any circumstances. If you plan to use a power cable other than the standard power cord
supplied with this equipment, first check that the protective grounding conductor is connected.
Before starting to operate this equipment, check the voltage rating to be sure that it matches your local
voltage. For further information, please refer to the specifications on page 10.
Finish the set up and installation before attempting to plug it into an electrical outlet. Never open the
equipment housing. Only authorized and qualified personnel may service or repair the equipment.
The device must be connected to an easily accessible supply socket so that in the event of a malfunc-
tion, the supply plug can be removed quickly.
Mechanical Safety
Be sure that the equipment rests on a stable surface that can safely support the weight of this
instrument.
Please note that you need to lock the system before you transport or move the equipment! For
further instructions, please refer to the section on “Static Load Adjustment and Transportation
Lock” on page 6.
Intended Use

5. Getting Started and Operation
Setting Up the Equipment
To obtain best performance from the Vario Basic 40/60/90, set it up on a stable, rigid and flat surface.
For optimal operating results, the planarity of the support surface should be 0.5 mm.
If you set up the Vario Basic 40/60/90 system on a table or bench frame, make sure that the table is dis-
tortion-free and stiff. Although most tables and bench frames have sufficient resistance to vertical vibra-
tion, they are relatively sensitive with respect to horizontal vibration. This causes amplification of struc-
ture and airborne noise.
Therefore, to set up your vibration isolation equipment, select a place with a vibration level that is as low
as possible. Vibration generated in this place should not exceed velocities of 500 µm/s. Read also page
8, section “Overmodulation of the System”.
Operating the system at low temperatures may cause malfunctioning. If the equipment is brought
from a cold environment into a relatively warmer one, we recommend that you wait approx. 2 – 3
hours before plugging it into AC power and switching on the power.
Start-up
Set up the isolation elements on a flat, stable surface at your work area.
Connect the isolation elements with the control unit by using the D-Sub cables
Connect the control unit to AC power (main supply).
The two isolation elements need to be connected by a mechanical link.
Center your application the top plate of the breadboard table top.
Conduct the manual load adjustment as a pre-condition of the active vibration isolation.
Turn on the power switch on the front panel of the control unit.
Set the switch for active isolation to on, blue LED is on.
For optimal results align the isolation elements parallel to each other at a minimal distance of 400 mm,
measured between the inner sides. A shorter distance between the isolation elements is possible, but
there is a risk that the system becomes instable when a taller application is used.
See that the connectors of each isolation element are located towards the respective opposite
isolation element. The connection cables must be always placed between the isolation elements. Use
both Sub-D 15 pin (male/female, male/female) cables supplied to connect port „Isolation Unit A/B“ on
the control unit.
It is recommended to fix your application to the isolation elements using the mounting holes to assure a
firm mechanical connection.

The Vario Basic isolation elements require a mechanical link to connect both elements. A commonly
used medium is an optical breadboard.
Static Load Adjustment and Transportation Lock
The top parts of the isolation elements are supported by four steel springs. These springs carry the static
load that has been placed on top. For the initial installation or after load changes these springs have to
be prestressed according to the weight of the setup. This procedure is called „static load adjustment“.
The objective of the load adjustment is to elastically support the top part by the springs so that the top
plate of the elements can be moved in any direction.
Fig. 1: Lever for static load adjustment
The state of the static load adjustment is indicated by a peg in a hole at each front of the isolation ele-
ment (see Fig. below). In the initial state (locked mode) or if the prestressing of the springs is too high
with respect to the load, the peg is located at the bottom of the hole (see Fig. 2, left hand side). The peg
is positioned at the top of the hole if the spring is not prestressed enough for the weight (see Fig. below
right hand side). The correct static load adjustment is achieved if the peg is in the middle of the hole (see
Fig. 2, center).
Fig. 2: Load indicator: picture left hand side; spring has been prestressed too much/picture center;
correct adjustment/picture right hand side; spring has not been prestressed sufficiently
- 7 -

The springs can be prestressed by turning the lever on the side of the element (see Fig. left hand side
below). In the initial state the lever is inside the element and it must be moved outside through the hole
in the side panel.
Fig. 3: VarioBasic isolation element with lever for prestressing the internal springs
Procedure of static load adjustment
To carry out the static load adjustment on the right hand side of the element (see Fig. above) follow this
procedure:
1. Check the position of the peg.
2. If the peg is in the center of the hole, no further load adjustment is required.
3. If the peg stands at the bottom position, reduce the prestress. For reducing the prestress the lever
has to be turned from front to side (see Fig. 4, left hand side). Note that during the process of turn-
ing the lever, it has to be pushed in the direction of the lever. The stop position for turning is given
by the end of the hole on the side panel. To move the lever back inside the housing or for further
reduction of prestress release pushing and turn the lever back.
4. If the peg is at the top position of the hole, increase the prestress. For increasing the prestress, the
lever has to be turned from side to front (see Fig. 4, right hand side). Note that during the process of
turning the lever, it has to be pushed in the direction of the lever. The stop position for turning is giv-
en by the end of the hole on the side panel. To move the lever back inside the housing or to further
increase prestress, stop pushing and turn the lever back.
Fig. 4: Moving the lever to reduce or increase the prestress of internal springs
To carry out the static load adjustment on the left hand side of the element repeat the proce
dure described above turning the lever in the opposite direction (to reduce the prestress = turn
lever from side to front / to increase the prestress = turn lever from front to side)

Vario Basic Control Unit
Vario Basic systems are supplied with an external control unit. For systems with four isolation elements,
we supply a 4-port control unit.
Controller Front Display
The controller front display of the Vario Basic system
is equipped with a main power switch, an on/off
switch for the active isolation mode and several LEDs.
All switches and LEDs are depicted in Fig. 5.
Fig. 5: Front view Vario Basic controller 40/60/90
After the controller has been switched on, the green „POWER“ LED lights up and the blue LED starts
blinking. The blue LED indicates the isolation mode. Blinking of this LED means that the system is in the
initialization or stand-by mode. After approximately 30 to 60 seconds, the blue LED shines on and the
system is then running in the active isolation mode. This mode can be changed by pressing the on/off
button for the active isolation mode. The factory setting of the active isolation mode is “on”.
Eight sensor-actuator units are integrated into the two isolation elements of the VarioBasic system. Each
unit is represented by a pictogram consisting of a circle with a sine symbol and an arrow printed on the
front panel. The sensor signals are displayed by the yellow LEDs and actuator outputs are indicated by
red LEDs, as shown in Fig 5. These LEDs flicker if extreme vibrations are present, or if there is a direct
excitation of the table top.
The LED pairs numbered from 1 to 4 correspond to isolation element B and 5 to 8 to isolation element A.
The arrows of the pictograms display the direction of the actuator force. The actuators 1, 4, 5 and 8 have
a vertical orientation whereas the other actuators 2, 3, 6 and 7 are placed in a horizontal direction.
Use the „power switch“ in front of the control unit to turn on the Vario Basic 40/60/90 power.
Press the on/off button to activate/deactivate the active vibration isolation.
Overmodulation of the System
The Vario Basic system is designed to compensate vibration amplitudes up to 500µm/s for the 300 and
600 kg version and 550 µm/s for the 100 kg version. If vibrations significantly exceed this level the sys-
tem changes to the stand-by mode which is indicated by a flashing blue LED. After the overload excita-
tion has stopped, the active isolation mode will automatically continue. Some of the sensor or actuator
LEDs may come on and persist for a few seconds. Following a severe overload, the system may take up
to 30 seconds to reach full active isolation but normally, only a few seconds are required.
The active vibration isolation is automatically switched off during overmodulation of the system.
Once this interference has subsided, the system re-initializes and, after a few seconds,
automatically resumes active vibration isolation. This procedure does not require any action from
the user.

6. Appendix
Care and Maintenance
The Vario Basic 40/60/90 system has been carefully designed and manufactured by Halcyonics.
To maintain this equipment and the validity of your warranty, you should observe the following
recommendations:
Store the system in a dry place. Never expose it to rain, liquids or dampness. The minerals con-
tained in these liquids may lead to short-circuits or corrosion of the electronic circuits.
Where possible, avoid operating and storing the system in dirty or dusty environments as this
may otherwise damage the electronic or mechanical components.
Do not store the system in hot environments. Operating the system at high temperatures may
compromise its performance and reduce its lifetime.
Do not store the system in cold environments. When the temperature rises to normal room
temperature, moisture condenses inside the system and causes a circuit failure. If you need to
transport the system from a cold environment to a warmer one, wait approx. 2 – 3 hours before
plugging it into AC power and switching it on.
Do not drop the system or shake it, and avoid exposing it to impact or blows. Improper handling
can damage the integrated electronics and mechanical components of the system.
To clean, wipe off dust from the exterior surfaces of the system using a lint-free cloth.
For cleaning, do not use any aggressive cleaning agents.
