1.0 General
1.1 Theseinstructionsprovidetheinformation
necessaryfortheinstallationofthe3M™Cross-
Connect Cabinets 4220VB and 4220VC Series.
The 4220VB and 4220VC series cabinets
are multiuse in that they can be ordered, or
convertedinthefield,asapadmount,stake
mount, pole mount or wall mount. They are less
than45"inheighttomeettheneedsofright-of-
wayandhouseframesthataccommodate3M™
Quick Connect System (QCS) 2810 Blocks. The
cabinetsareavailableempty,withfullyloaded
framesorpartiallyloadedframes.Cabinet
mounting, cable preparation, splicing, jumper
installationandaccessoriesofthecabinetare
covered in these instructions.
1.2 3M QCS Frames can be ordered loaded with
blocks, partially loaded with blocks or empty.
The block tails can be terminated with 3M™MS2™
Splicing Modules or 3M™710 Splice Connectors.
1.3 To make these instructions easier to read,
abbreviated cabinet product numbers will be
used throughout the steps. Use the Naming
Guide to determine the proper cabinet product
numbersneededforyourapplication.

Note: Install feeder and distribution cables allowing
10.5' above the pad.
5.1 Pad mount application
1. Position cabinet on pad
a. Removeframe
b. Removebottomfrontentryplateoncabinet
(ifrequired)
c. Installbackhalfof3M™Flex Port Kit 4297
(ifinstalling)
2. Ensure cabinet to pad alignment is square
3.Ensurecablestevenlyinsidecable
entrance chamber
4.Re-installbottomfrontentryplateon
cabinet(ifremoved)
5.Installfrontplateof3M™Flex Port Kit 4297
(ifinstalling)
6. Secure the cabinet to the pad
a.Reinstallthefourmountinglugsthat
secured the cabinet to the shipping pallet
b.Markthepadinthecenterofthe
mounting lug hole
c. Remove mounting lugs
d. Drill holes in pad per your company
directive
e. Install appropriate anchors per your
company directive
f.Reinstallmountinglugs
g. Shim cabinet as required to set level on
the pad
h. Bolt cabinet to pad per your company
directive

5.2 Stake mount application
a. Carefullyremoveearthfromaroundcables
to establish their location
b. Open doors on cabinet assembly
c. Removeblockframe
d. Removebottomfrontaccesspanel
e. Removebottomframesupport
f. Fill excavation with washed gravel to within
4"oftopofbottombracket
g. Place cabinet over cables in a vertical
position with cabinet centered over cables
h. Place anchor stakes on each side
i. Placeawoodenblockontopofstake
j. Using a sledge hammer, drive stake until
both bolt holes line up
k. Secureanchorstakestothesidesofthe
cabinet with bolts provided
l. Fill cabinet base with washed gravel to
within4"oftopofskirt
5.3 Pole mount application
1. Follow your company practice on attaching
‘pole mount hardware’
2. Attach the pole bracket at 60" above the
ground line
3. Attach the top and bottom mounting
bracketsonthebackofthecabinet
a. Make sure both brackets are aligned and
plumb with the cabinet
4. Hang the cabinet on the bracket
attached to pole
a. The top cabinet brackets support the
cabinet’s weight
5. Secure bottom cabinet bracket to the
pole with a lag bolt

2. Wrap sealing tape around the cable to a
diameter ¼" larger than cable port

6.2 Flexible Top Port Entry

2. Install the port body onto the threaded
studs
3. Reinstallthefrontplatetotheportbody

expandingfoam
7.0 Shield Bonding
1. Install 3M™Shield Bond Connector 4460 or
4462 per your company practice
2. Attach a bond strap between the shield
bond connector and the cabinet bond plate

4. Splicethefieldcabletotheblocktailsper
your company practice
5. Use 3M™Cable Ties to store the completed
bindersofsplicemodulesinthebackofthe
frame
NOTE: Allow adequate loop length to allow the frames
to pivot down
10.0 Identification of 3M™Quick
Connect System (QCS) 2810
Blocks Using Number Labels
10.1 Removeprotectortapefromidentificationpads
on the blocks in the cabinet.
10.2 Selectlabels:bluefordistributionorgreenfor
feeder.Detachastripof20labelswithyour
countfromsheet.Carefullyremoveprotective
backingfromstrip.
10.3 Align the proper number, such as 1-11-21, etc.,
withtheblockpadsonleftandpressintoplace.
Align numbers, such as 10-20-30, etc. with right
side block pads and press into place. Remove
thetoplinerofthenumbers.
10.4 Fill in binding post log on the cabinet door with
thecablepaircountinformation.
11.0 Jumper Wire Installation and
Routing of the 3M™Quick
Connect System (QCS) 2810
Blocks
11.1 Openfeederpairjumpercapbypushingupon
latch and rotating up. Insert jumper wire ends A
(tip)leftandB(ring)rightintowireopeningsin
cap, making sure they are inserted all the way to
thebackofthecap.

11.2 While holding the jumper wires in place, close
thecapandpresstosnapthelatchfirmlyinto
place.
11.3 Route the jumper wires to distribution pair
through wire loops on block ends and through
vertical and horizontal wireways. Cut jumper
wires to appropriate length, leaving at least 5 cm
(2in.)ofslack.
11.4 Terminate the jumper wires to the distribution pair
by repeating the procedure described in steps 15.1
and 15.2.
11.5 Terminate additional jumper wires by repeating
the above procedure.
11.6 To remove jumper wires, open the cap and pull
wiresstraightoutfromblock.
